Brake fluid is predominantly made of glycol-ether, which is a hygroscopic fluid, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air around it. That moisture doesn't just sit there quietly. It lowers the fluid's boiling point and it starts corroding metal parts from the inside — calipers, the ABS module, brake lines, the master cylinder.
Here's why that boiling point matters so much. When you're braking hard — coming down a hill, a panic stop, or towing — the fluid near the calipers gets hot. If there's enough water mixed in, that water can boil and turn to steam. When the brake fluid becomes saturated with water, that water can boil in the lines and produce steam, and unlike a liquid, a gas is highly compressible. A compressible fluid means your pedal goes soft or even to the floor, right when you need it most. That's called brake fade, and it's a scary feeling if you've never experienced it.

Some manufacturer recommendations range from every year or 15,000 miles to every three years or 45,000 miles, while others don't specify a set interval and instead mention replacing the fluid when the condition is bad. European brands tend to be stricter about this. Mercedes, for example, recommends replacing brake fluid every two years or 20,000 miles. Japanese and domestic manufacturers are often looser, basing it more on inspection. The 2012 Nissan Leaf's maintenance schedule called for brake fluid replacement every year or 15,000 miles under severe service and every two years or 30,000 miles otherwise, while the 2012 Toyota Camry's schedule didn't call for it through 12 years or 120,000 miles, though it did call for periodic inspection.
When there's no manufacturer-specific interval, the general rule most shops and industry groups use is roughly every 2 to 3 years, or about 20,000 to 45,000 miles — whichever comes first. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that brake fluid be replaced periodically to flush moisture and contaminants from the system, and AAA recommends flushing the brake system and replacing fluid every two years if the manual doesn't specify. My advice: check your owner's manual first, and if it's silent on the topic, treat two years as the safe default.

Your brake fluid should be clear or may have a slightly orange, blue, or green tint — if the fluid looks dark or murky, you should bring the vehicle in for service. That color change happens because the additive package in the fluid breaks down as it absorbs moisture and picks up trace metal from the system — it's basically the fluid telling you it's tired.
