2. Sniff the Exhaust — Internal Head Gasket or Intake Manifold Leaks

This is the one that worries me most, because it can quietly cook an engine over weeks. A bad cylinder-head gasket can leak either to the outside, which leaves spots on the ground, or into the engine's combustion chamber, where coolant gets burned with the normal air-fuel mixture, typically creating white exhaust smoke. Watch for:

  • Thick white smoke from the tailpipe that doesn't go away as the engine warms up
  • Milky or "milkshake" colored oil on the dipstick
  • Coolant that keeps dropping with zero drips anywhere

4. Pressure-Test the Whole System

A slow but steady drop in coolant with no external puddle suggests an internal leak like the heater core, so we perform a cooling-system pressure test, and if the system loses pressure with the engine off and no external leak is found, the heater core or an internal head gasket leak is likely. We'll also add UV dye to the coolant when needed — running the heater for 10 to 20 minutes and then inspecting the passenger footwell, heater hoses, and under-dash area with a UV lamp, since dye fluorescence pinpoints the leak.

Don't Ignore a Dropping Coolant Level

Whatever's causing it, a coolant system that's slowly losing fluid with no visible leak is not something to shrug off.
