Reduced Engine Power means the vehicle is limiting available engine performance; the message does not name the failed component. Acceleration or speed may be restricted. The permitted response depends on the exact model, other warnings and how the car behaves. Do not assume a protective mode makes continued driving safe.
What the warning tells you—and what it does not
The 2017 Chevrolet SS manual describes reduced acceleration and speed as possible effects and calls for service when the message remains or returns. That is a model-specific example, not a universal driving allowance. Read the instructions for your own year and engine.
A warning message, a diagnostic code and a confirmed diagnosis are different things. The message describes operating behavior; a code helps direct testing. Neither alone proves that a throttle body, pedal sensor or control module needs replacement.
Decide whether to stop and request assistance
- If the car cannot maintain a safe speed or respond predictably, move to a safe stopping place and arrange assistance.
- If oil pressure, overheating, severe shaking, smoke or abnormal noise accompanies the warning, stop safely and follow the relevant emergency instructions. Do not keep driving just because the engine still runs.
- If there is no obvious change in performance, check the model-specific manual and arrange diagnosis if the message remains or recurs.
Do not check fluid levels in moving traffic or open a hot cooling-system cap. A dashboard message cannot establish a universally safe distance to drive.
How to investigate possible causes

Should you reset it or disconnect the battery?
Do not disconnect the battery or clear codes as a repair attempt. It does not repair the underlying fault and can remove useful diagnostic information. If the manual specifies an ignition-cycle procedure, follow that procedure only when safe; a warning disappearing after a restart does not prove the cause has gone away.
Prepare for diagnosis
Once safely parked, record the exact message and other lamps. Note whether it happened during acceleration, after starting, in rain, when hot or after recent repairs. Bring service history and any code report. Ask for the findings, proposed work and verification before approving replacement parts. Do not reproduce the fault by driving into unsafe conditions.
