If your engine shuts off while driving, getting out of traffic safely comes before diagnosing it. A stall can involve fuel delivery, ignition, electrical power, engine control or a mechanical problem. The way it happened helps narrow the investigation, but does not identify a part to replace.
What to do when the engine stops in traffic
Keep control of the vehicle, switch on the hazard lights when safe and move to a safe stopping place if possible. Steering and braking assistance may be reduced, so more effort can be needed. Once stopped, arrange roadside assistance if the vehicle cannot be driven safely. Do not stand in a traffic lane to inspect it.
Do not repeatedly try to restart an engine with an oil-pressure or overheating warning, smoke, a fuel leak or abnormal mechanical noise. Follow the emergency instructions for your vehicle. A successful restart does not establish that an intermittent stall is fixed.
Use the pattern to guide diagnosis

Battery, alternator and warning lights
On a conventional combustion-engine vehicle, a charging-system fault can eventually leave insufficient electrical power to run engine controls. Loose power or ground connections can also interrupt operation. A weak battery alone is not proof of the cause of a running-engine stall; test the charging system and connections before replacing parts.
Note whether battery and oil lamps appeared before or only after the engine stopped. Lamps appearing after a stall can reflect the stopped engine rather than reveal the original fault.
Low oil is not a reliable automatic shutoff system
Do not assume the engine will shut itself down safely when oil is low. An oil-pressure warning requires action, not waiting for protection. Ford's linked warning-lamp guidance calls for a safe stop and engine shutdown; a correct oil level does not make a continuing pressure warning safe to ignore.
Stalling versus normal stop-start
Check your manual for the conditions and indicators of normal stop-start operation. Unexpected stopping at road speed, failure to restart normally or an accompanying fault message needs investigation. Not every vehicle has a separate idle-air control valve.
What to bring to a diagnostic appointment
Record the year, model, engine, mileage, exact messages, speed, engine temperature and recent repairs. Preserve fault codes rather than clearing them first. Ask which tests support the proposed repair and how it will be checked afterward; a code or symptom alone is not a parts list. Follow the vehicle's maintenance schedule, but do not treat maintenance as a guarantee against every stall.
